            Indian Medical Association, Madurai Branch happens to be oldest association for medical profession in India. It was on 20th March 1928, thirteen Medical practitioners of Madurai City that included Dr.G.D.Potham, Dr.A.Narayana Menon, Dr.N.Suryanarayanan and others formed our association in the name of Madurai Medical Association at Victoria Edward Hall at an annual subscription of Rs.1-00 only. Dr.G.D.Potham was the first president and Dr.A.Narayana Menon was the first Secretary. It is interesting to note that an  all India body for medical profession was formed only on 28th December 1928 at Calcutta in the name of All India Medical Association on 29th June, 1935. It became an affiliate to the renamed Indian Medical Association on 7th March 1936. Later it became a regular branch when state branch was formed in 1945. Our Association was duly registered under societies Act in the Year 1934. This branch was nurtured and grown to the magnificent status with membership of 1350 today/2008. Our esteemed branch is the largest one in India.

Academic Activities:-

            Right from its inception this association has been pursuing excellent academic activities in the form of regular monthly clinical meetings and CME programmes, Social and community activities in the form of Medical checkup and blood donation camps and now in CME programme in Tamilnadu to lay public of Madurai City.

             The Association hosted the All Indian Medical Conference in December 1946 at Madura College which was inaugurated by Sir.A.L. Mudaliar and our Madurai Branch hosted the State Conference in the year 1954, 1972, 1986 and 1997.

             The activities of our branch have brought in many awards at National and state level to our branch as well as individual members at many consecutive years. Our branch has provided many state presidents, Vice – Presidents and national Vice – Presidents.

             The Silver Jubilee of our branch was celebrated at its own newly constructed building No.1, Panagal Road, Madurai on 21st and 22nd February 1953. Dr.U.Krishna Rao gave the Jubilee address. The Golden Jubilee of the association was celebrated on 16th October 1977 at Madurai Medical College which was inaugurated by Dr.R.Subramanian, Madras. The Diamond jubilee of the branch was celebrated on 30th October 1988 at Hotel Tamilnadu, Madurai.

             IMA, Madurai branch reached another milestone by celebrating its platinum jubilee on 01.02.2004 and national president Dr.P.V.Geroge was Chief Guest.

Building Activities:-

             In the beginning years, the meetings of the Association were conducted at different places in Madurai city, namely Victoria Edward Hall, YMCA Hall Government Erskine Hospital and various schools of Madurai City.

             It was on 18th November 1950 that about one care of land at No.1 Panagal road at which our IMA exists today was purchased by its then president, Dr.P.Vadamalayan from Madurai Municipality at the Cost of Rs.50 per cent. The first building of IMA, Madurai branch was inaugurated on 21st of February 1953 by Thiru.Karumuthu Thiagaraja Chattier, an eminent industrialist of Madurai City during the silver Jubilee celebration of the Association.

             As the branch expanded another hall was constructed extending the first half and this hall named as Dr.S.V.K.Sthangarajan Memorial extension hall was inaugurated on 27th June 1980 by Dr.M.Natarajan, Madras. A Dining hall with 1000 sq.ft.,two rooms, kitchen and a complete compound wall in the front and a partial one in the eastern wing were constructed. The new hall named as Dr.P.Vadamalayan Memorial Hall was inaugurated on 28th August 1993 by the then seniormost member Dr.T.V.Venkateswaran. Another construction work with approximate 1400 sq.ft., consisting of an extension dining hall named as Dr.T.Subramanian Extension Hall was inaugurated on 28th April 1996 by the Past-President and senior members Dr.S.Shanmugam.

             There was a long felt need for a bigger Conference hall since the present meeting Hall can accommodated only 200 persons. It was achieved during the platinum jubilee celebration by inauguration of new Conference Hall built over the existing IMA building on area of 5,500 sq.ft., at the approximate cost ofRs.30 lakhs and it was inauguration on 1st February 2004by one of our senior most member and past president Dr.K.A.Ramalingam. The new beautiful hall named as “ ASI Madurai Branch ASICON 1999 hall” with granite flooring, marble staircase, two guestrooms and accommodation facilities for 750 persons is another milestone in the long history of IMA Madurai Branch.

OUR BRANCH PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS & SECRETARIES

A.C.Hall Project :-

            Dr.S.V.K.S. Hall of IMA Building was converted into A.C Scientific Hall with Modern Amenities like LCD Projection with Echo Audio System by the Building Improvement Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr.M. Amanullah and the Secretary Dr.S.S. Annamalaisamy with the Elected Committee of 10 members during the year October 2007.

            Right from its inception IMA Madurai Branch is being administered by regularly elected team of Office Bearers and at present it is being run by 48 elected Governing Body Members and Six Office Bearers. Under the President ship of Dr.V. Ravindranath, Dr.V. Rajagopalan as Vice President, Dr.R. Ravindran as Hony. Secretary, Dr.S. Babu as Joint Secretary,

Dr.R.R. Vijayakumar as Hony. Treasurer, Dr.A. MuthuArumugam, as Imm. Past President, Dr.K.S. Mayilvaganan as President Elect taking the lead of IMA Madurai Branch.

We are proud to Announce our Activities of togetherness for 80 years 

1. New Member are issued an Identity card which shell be valid for travel tatkal authentication, car loan, & bank also for discount at hotels & Restaurant at Madurai

2. IMA conducts regular CME’s to update & Import Knowledge for our Members.   IMA CGP wing of Madurai & IMA AMS Chapter of Madurai on their part conducting Scientific meetings for  the update.

3  Building Committee of IMA is very active – already completed the A.C Hall Project of the Scientific Hall. A.C Hall is very useful for our Scientific Programme as well as for our members family functions,  Taking Newer Projects like Water Tank Construction, Dinning Hall Extension and also a Proposal for constructing Building on Rental Basis for Banks is also on the pipelines.

4. A Medical Bulletin “Indian Medical Association, Madurai Branch” is published every month and circulated for our members and the copy is also sent to IMA State Officers. IMA Madurai Branch News, State News, Minutes of Monthly meetings, Editorial Board, President and the Secretary’s Message, Members Merits of Excellence, Scientific articles are well brought out. 

5  Crisis Management Committee actively involved in evolving a GO to protect Doctors during last year.

6  Quackery Team, Disaster Management Committee taking a leading role during crisis.

7  Constitution & Amendments Committee, Ethical & Legal Committee necessarily involve to Guide our Branch Activities.

8  Diabetic Education Programme and Free Medical Checkup every month is conducted by the Diabetic Association along with Physician’s Foundation, Presided by IMA President and conducted by the secretary of Diabetic Association. Various Health Topics were discussed every month Lay Public Education and Awareness Programme in Tamil are also conducted in this session.

9  Membership and Growth and welfare committee enrolled almost 90 new members last year with their encouragement the membership of IMA Madurai Branch grows.

10  Nursing Board Secretaries convened 4 NHB Meetings and arrived at a amicable settlement with   M/s Ramky Energy & Environmental Pvt. Ltd regarding Biomedical Waste Disposal accordingly a “MOU” was signed. 

11   Blood Donation campaigns are conducted at frequent intervals.

12    Multi Specialty Free Medical Camps conducted periodically.

13    Ladies Forum of IMA is also active taking care of Women’s Forum of IMA.

14    IMA Madurai Branch has launched a “Website” on September 2008 by IMA State President Dr.L.V.K.Moorthy for Member’s convenience. The “website” Acts as a Platform of Communication to our Members as well as to the Gen. Public of our IMA Madurai Branch Activities. It carries many folds of Activities – A recorded file manager of Madurai Branch.

15     The A.S.I Hall of IMA 1st  Floor is very convenient to conduct various functions like marriages private functions of any other organizations offered at a nominal rate.
